An interview with a wedding florist

Apr 29, 2020 | Wedding advice & ideas

It’s Wednesday which means it’s interview day! If you’ve been following my recent blog posts you’ll know I have started a new blog series called ‘An interview with’ whereby I am interviewing different vendors from across the wedding industry.

Today we have the lovely Kelly who is an Essex based florist from Miss Fleur Floral Design. Kelly will be answering our wedding related flower questions that I’m sure many of you will enjoy. I loved finding out Kelly’s favourite seasonal flowers, (I didn’t know them all by name, I had to Google them!) I may have to get some stock flowers in my garden this summer as they are so pretty.

I had the pleasure of first working with Kelly on Charlotte and Ollie’s wedding day back in 2018 at Red Brick Barn. I have not forgotten the floristry magic Kelly created on their wedding day, it included some of my all-time favourite wedding flowers! We were lucky enough to have this wedding featured on Love my Dress and Charlotte and Ollie even made it to the final of Easy Weddings ‘2019 Wedding of the Year’ competition!

Thank you so much to Kelly for taking the time to be a part of my new interview series, enjoy reading through below! If you’re looking for your wedding florist and want to chat through your ideas do get in touch with Kelly, I know she’d love to hear from you.

Essex wedding florist ‘Miss Fleur Floral Design‘ answers your questions:

TELL US YOUR STORY

I’m Kelly aka Miss Fleur Floral Design, 42 married with two teenage daughters and 2 crazy cocker spaniels. Miss Fleur Floral Design was founded in 2015 after the completion of a BA (Hons) Professional Floristry qualification from Writtle University College.

I am down to earth, friendly and approachable whilst still providing you with a professional service and I hope this reflects in my business and the services I offer.

I want you to choose a florist who you can feel comfortable and at ease with and most importantly someone you can trust on your big day. Whatever your needs, and whatever your budget, Miss Fleur would love to help you achieve the wedding flowers of your dreams.

I am happy to work with any style, from understated, to statement and any budget, with no minimum spend. Miss Fleur will help to maximise your budget and offer advice accordingly, the aim is to provide personalised flowers for your wedding or special event and for you to feel confident that you are in safe hands.

WHERE ARE YOU BASED AND WHERE DO YOU COVER?

We are based in the beautiful village of Coggeshall and we offer a complete wedding flower service including bridal party, church and reception flowers throughout Essex and Suffolk.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE SEASONAL FLOWERS?

My all-time favourite flower is the Carnation, controversial I know but they are amazing and come in the most beautiful shades and are available all year round. But for seasonality my favourites are:

Spring: Double Tulips

Summer: Stocks

Autumn: Dahlias

Winter: Berries/Twigs/Foliage

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO CREATE WITH FLOWERS?

My favourite thing and always will be is making the bridal bouquet, which is usually the first thing I do. It’s the biggest part of your wedding ‘flower wise’ and it really sets the scene becoming the main focal point. When looking back at your wedding pictures you will always notice your bouquet!

IF COUPLES OPTED FOR A FLORAL ARCHWAY AT THEIR CHURCH, DO YOU OFFER A SERVICE TO MOVE THE ARCH TO THEIR VENUE?

Yes, we can move any arrangement if possible, provided we make it with dual-use in mind. I always recommend to our couples that they re-use and re-purpose as much of their flowers as possible.

HOW CAN COUPLES USE FLOWERS ON THEIR WEDDING DAY?

Apart from the obvious bouquets, table centrepieces etc flowers can be used in the hair, as favours, photo and cake backdrops, confetti, thank you flowers for mums, arches, cake decoration, the list is endless.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF FLORISTRY?

Natural and romantic, I am not a neat freak and I don’t like anything too matchy matchy! I have heard people say that you can tell straight away if it’s a Miss Fleur bouquet!

If you have a preferred colour scheme, I will always suggest using tints, tones and shades of the same colour to give a more gentle effect.

WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU LOVING AT THE MOMENT?

Greenery is still a huge trend which doesn’t look like disappearing any time soon, dried flowers are also making a huge comeback and look great mixed in with fresh flowers.

Artificial flowers are also favoured, although with being a florist fresh flowers will always be my preferred choice, although I am more than happy to embrace the faux look should that be your thing!

WHEN WOULD YOU ADVISE COUPLES TO BOOK THEIR WEDDING FLORIST?

ASAP, especially if a prime summer date! As soon as your venue is booked, consider looking for your florist.

Don’t always go for the cheapest you can find, choose a florist who you actually like and have a good rapport with. Any good florist should be able to work to any budget you have for flowers and be completely honest with you on what is achievable within that budget.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A COUPLE WHO ARE UNSURE OF WHAT THEY’D LIKE THEIR WEDDING FLOWERS TO LOOK LIKE?

Leave it to your florist, give them the look and feel you want with any colours you love etc, share your Pinterest board with them and let them roll with it. Don’t be too obsessed with copying exact designs, you don’t want to copy someone else’s wedding designs you want your own.

HOW CAN COUPLES PRESERVE SOME OF THEIR WEDDING FLOWERS?

There are lots of preservation companies now that can preserve your whole bouquet and put into a frame but I am loving taking individual flowers from your bouquets and setting them into resin shapes, a perfect keepsake from your special day.

DO YOU WORK WITH CAKE MAKERS IF COUPLES WANT TO DECORATE THEIR CAKE WITH FLOWERS?

Yes, we know a lot of the cake makers now in the wedding industry. We always work closely and communicate with them as to what will work best on your cake.
