An interview with a wedding hairstylist

May 6, 2020 | Wedding advice & ideas

Today we are chatting all things hair with the lovely Charlotte from Hair so Boho. I first worked with Charlotte last year on a styled shoot organised by Aimie from One Oake. Not only did Charlotte do the bridal hairstyling but she also modelled too, doesn’t she just make the most beautiful bride! The shoot was so much fun and it was great to work with lots of new wedding vendors.

Ever since the styled shoot, I have followed Charlotte’s work on Instagram and it’s fair to say I am now a lover of the relaxed, beachy, boho styles that she creates and shares. Got me dreaming of the days when I used to have long hair!

I will certainly be giving the coconut oil hair treatment a try, after hearing how much Charlotte raves about how good this is for having healthy hair.

Thank you for taking the time to share your tips and answering the questions below, I’m sure your style of work will inspire lots of brides and many boho hair Pinterest boards will be made! If you like Charlotte’s bridal hairstyling do hop over to her Instagram to see her latest creations and drop her a message to see if she is available on your wedding day.

Essex wedding bridal hair specialist ‘Hair so Boho’ answers your questions:

TELL US YOUR STORY

My name is Charlotte, I started my own bridal hair business in 2018 and have never looked back. It is what I am passionate about and I am so enthusiastic about every single wedding that I style for.

I specialise in the wedding industry and have an extensive range of skills to create my brides dream wedding hair. My style is unique and tailored to fit in beautifully with the whole wedding vibe, whether it be modern, traditional, or something completely different!

WHERE ARE YOU BASED AND WHERE DO YOU COVER?

I am based in Colchester, Essex, however, I will literally travel to anywhere in the UK. I can also be available for destination weddings.

HOW CAN BRIDES ACHIEVE HEALTHY HAIR FOR THEIR WEDDING DAY?

I have so many tips and advice on how to help brides get their hair in a better condition on the lead up to their Big Day. I focus on this a lot through my social media and I have a helpful document that I can send on how to achieve stronger, healthier hair. My absolute favourite is coconut oil – this is a game-changer!

DO YOU WORK WITH EXTENSIONS AND DO YOU RECOMMEND THEM FOR A FULLER LOOK?

Yes I do! What I recommend is always on an individual basis and depending on the desired, finished style.

DO YOU RECOMMEND A TRIAL?

I would always recommend a trial. This allows me to see my brides hair, discuss their dream hair style and create it for them just as they imagined! We can also try out various different looks and it gives me the opportunity to meet my brides and visualise their day. I think this is so important.

WHAT BRIDAL ACCESSORIES DO YOU RECOMMEND/LOVE USING?

I have so many recommended local suppliers that I absolutely love to work with! My typical styles are very Boho, so I get a lot of flower crowns, dainty vines and crystals in the hair. I think a hair accessory can literally transform a style, so it’s always so much fun to discuss options once a style has been chosen!

HAIR UP, HAIR DOWN OR HALF UP HALF DOWN, HOW TO DECIDE?

I think this depends hugely on what my bride feels comfortable with. Some people like to go for the total opposite, so, for example, they may choose an updo if they always wear their hair down, however, I think the key is that my bride still feels like themselves.

Hair is such a huge thing. Think about how we look back over the years and always look at the hair trends. I think it is so important that my brides look back and love their hair even 20 years later! The chosen style also depends on their incredible dress. If there is a lot of delicate beading on the back, it may be a shame to cover this, so that may impact the chosen look. However, there are so many options to ensure that everything compliments each other.

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN YOU DO HAIR FOR ON A WEDDING MORNING BEFORE NEEDING HELP FROM AN ASSISTANT?

This all depends on the time we can get into the bridal suite, the ceremony time and the chosen styles.

ON AVERAGE HOW LONG DOES BRIDAL HAIR TAKE ON A WEDDING DAY?

I allow 1 hour – 1 hour and a half for my bride, regardless of their chosen style. It is crucial that the mornings are spent nice and relaxed, with no real clock watching so that my bride has cherished memories with her bride squad!

The key to keeping hair to last all day is all in the prep, so that is always vital to be factored into my timings. For bridesmaids, I allocate approximately 45mins per person.

DO YOU FIND IT HELPFUL WHEN BRIDES USE PINTEREST TO COLLECT HAIRSTYLES THEY LIKE?

Absolutely! The more inspiration the better! I would always strongly recommend my brides try and search on Pinterest but only looking at hair that’s a similar colour and texture to their own.

WHAT BRIDAL TRENDS ARE YOU LOVING?

I absolutely love the effortless, glowing, beachy wave vibes right now. Dewy skin and perfect waves with braids are my favourite. However, I also adore a classic updo – I just love doing any hair!

WHAT IS YOU FAVOURITE WEDDING VENUE TO WORK AT AND WHY?

This is so tough! We have so many beautiful venues in this area, we are spoilt! I actually can’t pick!

WHERE CAN WE SEE YOUR LATEST UPDATES?

My Instagram is the best place to see my latest updates.
