Set in Rochford, Essex, Apton Hall is a dream wedding venue for couples and photographers alike. With its mix of rustic charm and modern elegance, it offers endless opportunities to capture magical moments. Here’s everything I love about photographing weddings at Apton Hall, along with some top tips for couples tying the knot here.
History
Apton Hall boasts a rich history, blending its historic charm with modern amenities. Originally a working farm, this venue has been beautifully restored while retaining its character. Its historic touches, from the original brickwork to timber beams, create a warm, welcoming atmosphere that photographs beautifully.

Ceremony locations at Apton Hall
The Stables
Apton Hall’s ceremony barn is a beautifully transformed space, originally part of the venue’s stables. With high ceilings, exposed brickwork, and elegant wrought-iron chandeliers, it offers a stunning backdrop for your wedding ceremony. The working stable doors and floor-to-ceiling glass windows flood the room with natural light, making it a dream for light and bright wedding photography.
This indoor ceremony room can comfortably host up to 115 guests, and thanks to its underfloor heating, it’s cosy and inviting even in the cooler months – a true all-seasons space. I haven’t had the pleasure of photographing a December wedding at Apton Hall yet, but I can only imagine how magical it must look during the festive season.
Insider tip:
Worried about how to make your grand entrance without being seen by your soon-to-be spouse? Don’t fret! The stable doors are kept closed as you make your way to the ceremony, ensuring your first appearance is a magical moment when you step into the room. Once you’re out of sight, the doors are opened again, letting that beautiful natural light pour back in to create a bright and airy atmosphere for the rest of your ceremony.

The Courtyard
For couples envisioning an outdoor ceremony, Apton Hall also boasts a handcrafted gazebo in the heart of the Courtyard. It’s a picturesque spot to exchange vows under the open sky or to use as a focal point for live music during your reception drinks. Both options provide unique, photo-worthy settings for your special day.

The New Barn: the backdrop to your wedding breakfast
The New Barn at Apton Hall, added during the 2016 renovation, offers a stunning and flexible space for your reception. With large glass bi-folding doors along one side, the room opens onto the Courtyard in summer, bringing in fresh air and natural light. In winter, the doors still let in plenty of light, keeping the space bright and inviting.
The barn’s exposed brick and light-filled interiors make it a perfect backdrop for any style of decor, from simple greenery to vibrant floral centrepieces.
For larger weddings, the extension doubles the space, accommodating up to 200 guests. It features another full-length glass wall with views of the Coach House and Walled Garden.

The Cowshed: where the party happens
Once the farm’s cowshed, the bar and dance area at Apton Hall has been transformed into a stylish, fully air-conditioned space perfect for your evening reception.
The large main bar stays open throughout the night, making it the perfect spot for guests to mingle and enjoy a drink as the party kicks off. Whether you opt for a DJ or live music, the high ceilings, wooden beams, and twinkling fairy lights create an inviting, celebratory atmosphere that will have everyone dancing the night away.

Accommodation
One of Apton Hall’s unique features is its onsite accommodation. The romantic Grade II listed Dovecot Suite and comfortable guest rooms in The Coach House offer couples and their loved ones a chance to relax and stay together after the festivities. The soft, neutral tones of the rooms also make them ideal for getting-ready photos full of calm and elegance.
Insider tip:
If you have more than 4 people getting ready with you in the morning Dovecot can feel a little crowded because it isn’t the largest space especially so when you have suppliers (hair/make-up/assistants/photographer/videographer) in the space too. I recommend using the new (as of 2024) onsite Dressing Room which has more space and is accessible from 8.30am.
